Friday hiking journal: Meinong Unveiled: A Tapestry of Trails, Tastes, and Traditions

Published 4 months ago • 2 min read

Hey Reader,

When doing hikes all over Taiwan, I came across many small towns or villages worth spending extra time on. However, the fatigue, my swollen feet, and the departure time dragged me away from exploring further. Meinong is one of them. I did a hike from Qishan to Meinong in Kaohsiung last year. I decided to do this hike again and explore Meinong.

Highlights about this hike:

  • A Glimpse into Meinong's Past
  • Exploring on Two Wheels: Bike Trails in Meinong
  • Meinong Flat Noodles: A Culinary Delight
  • How to Get There and Bike Trail Maps

A Glimpse into Meinong's Past

Nestled in the serene outskirts of Kaohsiung, Meinong's history is as rich as its landscapes. Initially inhabited by the Hakka people, this district is a tapestry woven with migration, perseverance, and cultural fusion stories. From its early days as a farming village famous for growing tobacco to its current recognition as a cultural hub, Meinong's journey through time is a testament to the resilience and spirit of its people.

Exploring on Two Wheels: Bike Trails in Meinong

Meinong invites cyclists to embark on a journey through its breathtaking scenery. With trails that meander through lush fields and past historical landmarks, biking in Meinong is more than exercise; it's an immersive experience. Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or a leisurely rider, the bike trails here promise a unique blend of adventure, tranquility, and a close encounter with the district's natural beauty.

Meinong Flat Noodles: A Culinary Delight

A visit to Meinong is incomplete without savoring its iconic flat noodles. Known for their chewy texture and the meticulous process involved in their making, these noodles are not just food; they're a culinary heritage. Often served in a hearty broth or paired with local ingredients, Meinong's flat noodles offer a taste of tradition preserved and cherished through generations.

Meinong is a vibrant canvas of Hakka culture embraced by the layers of mountains. If you can visit Kaohsiung, arrange a time to cycle around and experience the serenity that can only be found here.

This post is sentimental. In November 2023, I hiked to two of Shakadang's Three Heroes in Taroko, intending to return to Qingshuidashan later. (The beautiful view of Crescent Bay from Qingshuidashan. Photo by Xiao Tsai) Highlights: The charming Dali Church Mt. Qianliyan offers great views but is challenging. With rock scrambles, Qingshuidashan, or Mt. Qingshui, is even more challenging, but the views are rewarding. I also discovered indigenous tribe tours in Hualien and Taitung, offering...

There's always a tipping point that makes us do something. 5+ years ago, I was brewing the idea of writing an English website (definitely out of my comfort zone). When I did this hike and chatted with a fellow hiking mate, I decided that was it. I was going to make a website about hiking in Taiwan. I'm glad to return to Jialuo Lake and said I made it. (Jialuo Lake) Highlights: Beautiful Trails in Taipingshan (those can be standalone hikes) Mysterious ponds to explore How to plan this hike and...

After the recent major earthquake, many people and travelers are concerned about the safety of hiking in Taiwan. Questions about hiking post-typhoon are also common. In this post, I'll address these concerns, as well as other frequently asked questions about permits, hiring porters, gear rentals, weather, and car rentals. I often receive inquiries about temperatures in the high mountains. To assist, I've included a graphic that illustrates how altitude affects the temperature in the high...
