Friday hiking journal: What would you like to see from Taiwan Hikes in 2024?

Hey Reader,

Happy New Year 2024!

Reflecting on 2023, I lost my father in July, started new businesses in October, and met many inspiring individuals virtually and in person. My hiking adventures continued, bringing both challenges and serenity.

As we step into 2024, I'm eager to try something new.

While the posts on Taiwan Hikes are long and detailed, those I share every Friday are short, relatively easy hikes or things you might be interested in, like smaller trails, old houses, etc. I still have so many trials waiting to put into words, but the time is limited, so I need to be more productive.

Looking ahead to 2024, I have a few goals:

1. Continuing the Hiking Planning Service: Last year, I began assisting hikers in planning their adventures in Taiwan. Navigating the trails and logistics can be daunting, especially for those new to Taiwan.

2. Small Group Hikes for Non-Chinese Speakers: I'm exploring ways to open up guided hiking trips in Taiwan to a wider audience.

3. Enhancing the Social Media Presence: Keeping up with regular posts on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter (my preferred name than X) is quite the task. I'll try to keep up with them if possible.

4. Balancing Work and Wellness: I have a huge knot on my right shoulder blade, and you might experience the same thing, too.

What are your plans for 2024? What would you like to see from Taiwan Hikes and Friday Hiking Journal?

I'd love to hear about your plans for 2024 and what you'd like to see from Taiwan Hikes and our Friday Hiking Journal.

This year marks my 5th anniversary with Taiwan Hikes, and it's been a journey filled with learning and growth. Thank you for being a part of this journey. I'm looking forward to another fantastic year together.

This post is sentimental. In November 2023, I hiked to two of Shakadang's Three Heroes in Taroko, intending to return to Qingshuidashan later. (The beautiful view of Crescent Bay from Qingshuidashan. Photo by Xiao Tsai) Highlights: The charming Dali Church Mt. Qianliyan offers great views but is challenging. With rock scrambles, Qingshuidashan, or Mt. Qingshui, is even more challenging, but the views are rewarding. I also discovered indigenous tribe tours in Hualien and Taitung, offering...

There's always a tipping point that makes us do something. 5+ years ago, I was brewing the idea of writing an English website (definitely out of my comfort zone). When I did this hike and chatted with a fellow hiking mate, I decided that was it. I was going to make a website about hiking in Taiwan. I'm glad to return to Jialuo Lake and said I made it. (Jialuo Lake) Highlights: Beautiful Trails in Taipingshan (those can be standalone hikes) Mysterious ponds to explore How to plan this hike and...

After the recent major earthquake, many people and travelers are concerned about the safety of hiking in Taiwan. Questions about hiking post-typhoon are also common. In this post, I'll address these concerns, as well as other frequently asked questions about permits, hiring porters, gear rentals, weather, and car rentals. I often receive inquiries about temperatures in the high mountains. To assist, I've included a graphic that illustrates how altitude affects the temperature in the high...
